The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has been publishing a lot of printed books. Currently, the mobile app has been released in line with scientific development. Below is the news released by the organization.
Its free to download and available on Google Play Store and iPhone apps. The App was jointly conceptualized by BNHS and Accenture Lab. Accenture Labs has developed it pro bono for the BNHS citizen science initiative for bird watchers.
Something about the Application:
🐤The App helps in identifying around 600 common bird species found in India.
🐤It works offline also using on the edge technology.
🐤It is free to download and available on Google Play Store and iPhone. It is a non-commercial Application as a part of citizen science initiative.
🐤It is developed using bird images contributed by bird watchers.
🐤The App aims to help amateur bird watchers and general citizens in identifying common birds. It's not meant for bird experts.
🐤The App does not ask you to provide any details of your contacts, phone numbers or bank details.
🐤The App has a “crop” function, by which you can tightly crop bird photos and then get the identification done.
Where we are trying to improve the App:
🐦The App is available for Android and iPhone Mobile users.
🐦The App is not be able to identify every species in India; in fact, it is trained only for around 600 common bird species found in India (that amounts to less than 50% of India's huge bird diversity). We are trying to improve upon this number, as we get more images of additional bird from bird watchers.
🐦We expect issues in identifying many species of birds, especially species not trained (no images available with us/ juveniles or females of many species/ various morphs of raptors/ cryptic species (difficult to identify) like warblers which often confuses amateur and even seasoned bird watchers.
🐦We want to train the App to identify all common birds with 100% accuracy. We are trying to train the App with more images and for more species, which will surely improve the percentage of correct results.
How you can help in improving:
🐥We welcome critical review and suggestions to improve the App.
🐥We also request bird watchers/ photographers to please help us at BNHS to improve the “Internet of Birds” App by contributing your images of bird species not trained (see the list in the App description).
🐥Please send high resolution photos to us on this email id: internetofbirds@bnhs.org
🐥Images contributed will be used only for training the App.
🐥Names of all photo contributors will be mentioned in the App description.
Finally, thanks to all the photographers and volunteers, who have contributed to the development of this App, which will help in creating awareness about birds and biodiversity. Lastly, “the human brain cannot be replaced by any ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI). So, AI can also make mistakes”.
